When people think of Volvo, they often think of boring. They think of floating pillows that are built entirely to keep people safe and protect them. The thing is, Volvo has made some very interesting cars.
Volvo is also attempting to become the industry leader in automotive future tech. They are the first to announce the end of their standard gasoline and diesel engines in cars. By 2025 all Volvos will be hybrids, plug in hybrids or electric in take.
The current product line is a glimpse into that future. Almost every vehicle is available with a hybrid or plug in hybrid option already! As the world goes cleaner with their automobiles, Volvo is leading the way!
Volvo S60 - $35,000+
37.0 mpg - 7.9/10.0
The entry level luxury Volvo is the S60. It features some traditional Scandinavian styling cues. It’s packed full of safety features just like every Volvo, but the S60 also provides some great excitement for drivers. The base engine has 240 horsepower, but the S60 Polestar is a specially equipped version boasting a 362 horsepower engine.
Volvo V60 - $37,200+
30.0 mpg - 8.8/10.0
Safety might be the first thing that people think of when it comes to a Volvo, but a station wagon is a close second! The V60 comes with similar engine options to the S60, but somehow is a far more attractive vehicle than the S60. You still get all the enjoyment, but also the peace of mind that standard automatic emergency braking brings.
Volvo XC60 - $42,000+
27.0 mpg - 6.8/10.0
The Volvo XC60 is Volvo’s smallest luxury crossover. It’s based off the chassis of the S60 and gives a third option from the S60 and the V60. Volvo is known for their sedans and wagons, but their crossover options are a new field for them. The XC60 pairs an 8 speed transmission to all of their engine options. It’s a perfectly acceptable vehicle. It’s just not as refined or excellent as their other offerings.
Volvo S90 - $48,000+
34.0 mpg - 8.8/10.0
The S60 is the feisty troublemaker of the Volvo lineup. The S90 is instead the patriarch. The S90 takes a look at the world and just quietly sneers at all the craziness. The S90 is of course an incredibly safe car since it’s a Volvo. Automatic steering in case of an incapacitated driver is one of the best safety features available in the entire world. The S90 doesn’t have as much oomph under the hood as a lot of the car it competes with, but it doesn’t care about all that. It’s still a brilliant car.
Volvo V90 - $56,300+
30.0 mpg - 8.1/10.0
The V90 once again shows that the Volvo wagon is alive and well. Getting 316 horsepower out of a 4 cylinder engine is incredibly difficult, but Volvo has managed it through both turbochargers and superchargers. The V60 isn’t alone in the luxury wagon market so it’s good that it’s such a great combination of refinement and safety.
Volvo XC90 - $46,800+
25.0 mpg - 9.7/10.0
The XC90 is one of the best examples of the potential of a plug in hybrid. Yes it has that wonderful 316 horsepower four cylinder engine, but can also be operated as a plug in hybrid. The plug in Hybrid option increases the fuel economy up to a fantastic 53 mpg and also has the potential to put out over 400 horsepower.
